What distinguishes our approach
Pension matters often involve a long accumulation of documents and correspondences. We approach each matter with the patience that such a history demands.
Reading before advising
We study the complete documentation before forming a view. Commentary is prepared only after the relevant provisions have been properly understood in their context.
Communication in plain terms
Legal instruments can be dense. Our written commentaries are prepared for ordinary reading — not for those already versed in trust law and scheme administration.
No pressure to proceed
An initial written enquiry carries no obligation. Where escalation in any dispute becomes a possibility, we consult before taking any step forward.
Discretion throughout
Pension matters frequently touch on private financial arrangements. We treat each engagement with the degree of discretion that such matters warrant.
A brief enquiry is always welcome.
Whether you have a specific concern about your scheme or would simply like to understand what your documentation says, a short message or telephone call is the natural place to begin. There is no obligation to proceed further.
Questions we are often asked
What does a document analysis actually produce?
You receive a written commentary — usually several pages — identifying the provisions most likely to affect your situation. We draw your attention to the clauses governing entitlement, any conditions attached to payment, and any areas where the scheme documentation appears ambiguous. The commentary is written for reading, not as a legal opinion for onward submission.
How long does the analysis take?
The time depends on the volume and complexity of the scheme documents you provide. A standard handbook and trust deed can usually be turned into a commentary within ten to fifteen working days. We will give you a more specific indication once we have reviewed what you have provided.
What qualifies as an informal dispute?
An informal dispute is any unresolved disagreement — with an employer, a former employer, or a pension administrator — that has not been submitted to a tribunal or formal adjudicatory body. This includes unanswered queries, disputed calculations, refusals to release documentation, and unresolved questions about entitlement that have stalled in correspondence.
Who are letters of instruction written for?
They are most commonly prepared for adult children who may one day be dealing with pension administrators on a client's behalf, for financial institutions that require formal written direction, and for pension administrators where a client wishes to make a formal nomination or vary their nominated beneficiary. The letters are drafted to be understood by the person receiving them.
Do I need all three services?
Not necessarily. Each service stands on its own. Some clients come only to have their scheme documents read and explained. Others come when a dispute has already arisen. A number come specifically to put letters of instruction in order as part of their later-life planning. We will discuss what is useful during your initial enquiry.
What should I bring to a first consultation?
Whatever pension documentation you have — handbooks, benefit statements, any letters from your employer or administrator, and any correspondence that relates to the matter you would like attended to. You are not expected to have organised these in any particular way. We will review what you have and let you know if anything further is needed.
